Obituary

Jerry Glenn Walker, age 91, of Dyer, Tennessee (Formerly of Owosso, Michigan), passed away from this life on Thursday, March 19, at Dyer Nursing home and Rehab, while on Hospice after a several-month-long struggle with multiple health issues. There will be a graveside funeral tomorrow at the Poplar Springs Cemetery in Atwood, Tennessee, on March 21st at 2:00 pm Central, with Reverend Hobart Walker officiating. Internment to immediately follow.

Born on May 21, 1934, to James Orian Walker and Thelma Walker (Tate) in Tennessee. He was the oldest of 3 boys. He told multiple stories that would have your belly aching and tears running down your face from laughing so hard at his adventurous childhood with his brothers, Windal and Lynn, and their cousins.

Life & Work

He married Modine Banister in Tennessee, and had their first of 3 children, Sherry Jean. They moved to Michigan and had their last two children, Terry Glenn and Kerry Gail. His second marriage was to Evelyn Warner, with whom he had 4 children: Terrial Lynn (Terry Walker), Newborn Son (who died shortly after birth), Timmy Lou, and Jenna Best "Sis". That marriage also ended in divorce. Jerry spent the majority of his 91 years in Michigan (though he held on to his Southern accent, "the ladies like it," he was known to say) and was a well-respected and highly sought-after master mechanic and "Jack of All Trades". He could fix or build just about anything. He loved to laugh and to make others laugh, and he also loved to get people "fussing at each other" for "entertainment," he once confessed.

Family

He is survived by his six children: Sherry Jean Walker; Terry Glenn Walker; Kerry Gail Kyle (Carl Kyle); Terrial Lynn Walker, also known as Terry Walker (Rachelle Walker); Timmy Walker (Holly Walker); and Jenna Best (Leland Best). He is also survived by his brothers, Windal Walker and Lynn Walker, along with 15 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren.

Personal Life

His was not an ordinary life by any means. To quote his son, "He marched to the beat of his own drum". He forged his own path and didn't much care what people thought, except about his appearance. Heaven help anyone who dared to touch his perfectly styled hair. He loved to fish and go camping as often as possible, and BBQ some delicious pork shoulder in the summer. While he was a complicated man, he will be missed, loved, and remembered always.

A Final Prayer for Dad

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. O God, who in Your mercy call Your children home, I offer my father back to You. Thank You for his life, for every moment of love, every sacrifice, every joy and sorrow that shaped him. If there is any purification still needed, I beg You, in Your mercy, to hasten it through Your grace, the merits of Christ, and the prayers of the Church. May he rest in peace. May he know the fullness of joy in Your presence. May he see You face to face and dwell forever in Your love. Comfort my heart, Lord, and hold me close in this time of grief. Help me to trust that love is stronger than death and that we will meet again.
Amen
